A Brief Discussion on Chinese "SMS Literature"

Abstract

SMS literature is a literary form that uses mobile text messages as its instrument. Characterized by brevity and flexible expression, it embodies the unique charm of literature in the digital age. The development of SMS literature can be divided into three stages: budding, formative, and flourishing. Its main content includes categories such as blessings, lyrical expressions, and humor or satire, catering to people's emotional communication and entertainment needs. In terms of literary forms, SMS literature encompasses various genres, including poetry, prose, short stories, and fables, showcasing its creative diversity. Its aesthetic features include concise language, free-form expression, strong interactivity, a folk character, and an emphasis on entertainment, reflecting its strong connection to popular culture and everyday life. As a form of popular literature, SMS literature has expanded the ways literature can be expressed and enriched by cultural communication channels. While meeting psychological and aesthetic needs, it also reflects the profound impact of social and technological changes, holding significant cultural and societal value.
