Abstract

The Rhetoric of Quranic Vocabulary in Al-Taftazani's Hashiyah on Al-Kashshaf

Abstract:

This research investigates the rhetoric of Quranic vocabulary as interpreted by the renowned scholar Sa'd al-Din Al-Taftazani in his gloss (Hashiyah) on Al-Zamakhshari's Al-Kashshaf. The study is particularly timely following the recent complete publication of this manuscript in Istanbul. It first examines the concept of rhetorical efficacy in a Quranic word and then analyzes how al-Taftazani addresses this topic through explanation and interpretation within his gloss. The study highlights points of both agreement and divergence between Al-Taftazani and Al-Zamakhshari.
The analysis is structured by categorizing these rhetorical issues into two main sections: one dedicated to the rhetoric of nouns and another to the rhetoric of verbs, each considered within its specific Quranic context. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach for the rhetorical issues and a critical approach to assess the merits and shortcomings of the recently published manuscript.
One of the key findings is the identification of instances where Al-Taftazani expands upon Al-Zamakhshari's contributions. However, the study also notes that in most rhetorical matters, Al-Taftazani’s work primarily focuses on explanation and interpretation rather than offering substantial additions.
