The use of che in “I Malavoglia” and the problems of translation into arabic

Abstract

The syntactic function of che in the italian sentence can create a problem in translation because of its different uses. Che can be used as an interrogative pronoun when it is followed by a verb or an interrogative adjective when it is followed by a noun, an exclamatory pronoun when it is followed by a verb. It can also be an exclamatory adjective when it is followed by a noun, a relative pronoun with the functions of subject or object complement, or an indefinite pronoun. Moreover, it can be used as a conjunction. These various uses could create problems for the translator. In this study, I attempt to present the different uses of che and the problems caused by its various translations. The uses and functions of che will be explained through examples from the novel "I Malavoglia" by Giovanni Verga and its Arabic translation «عائلة المالافوليا» by Yasser Sharaf.
