The Future of Educational Institutions in Light of Metaverse Technology and Its Impact on Educational Opportunity Equality: A Social Foresight Perspective

Abstract

The research aimed to observe, analyze, and interpret the perspectives of a sample of experts in the field of technology regarding the future of educational institutions in light of the application of Metaverse technology. It particularly focused on the potential implications for educational equity in terms of the nature of the phenomenon, its implementation challenges, and its advantages—within the framework of a futures studies approach.A questionnaire was administered to a sample of thirty (30) technology experts using the Delphi method to identify possible and desirable scenarios in light of achieving sustainable education.The research reached several findings, most notably: the experts in the sample confirmed that the "Educational Metaverse" technology has become an urgent necessity imposed by modern technological advancements. Therefore, it is essential to provide an appropriate infrastructure to establish a user-friendly digital platform that ensures equal educational opportunities for all students. Additionally, fully equipped laboratories should be made available, along with educational curricula specifically designed to align with virtual reality and the Metaverse environment. These curricula should include interactive designs and realistic experiences that contribute to enhancing students' understanding of concepts.
