Abstract
This study seeks to evaluate the spatial efficiency of changes occurring in East African cities due to urban expansion and transformation. Aiming to understand the role of these changes in reshaping urban structures and achieving sustainable spatial transformation. The study relies on remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS), along with statistical analysis using ANOVA. The research focuses on five major cities in East Africa from 2003 to 2023, utilizing spatial and statistical analysis of spatial matrix data for several indicators of spatial structure change, including the Annual Urban Expansion Rate (AUER), Urban Expansion Intensity Index (UEII), Urban Expansion Differentiation Index (UEDI), and Urban Growth Coefficient (UGC). It also analyzes urban morphological characteristics to assess the efficiency of spatial transformations and the role of spatial configuration in urban development and sustainability, identifying potential areas for sustainable spatial transformation within the studied cities.
