Analytical vision of the Woman image and manifestations of social life in Algerian popular proverbs: a field study in social anthropology

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the extent to which the Algerian folk proverbs reflect on the social and family relations of the Algerian people. The study was conducted on the community of Algiers, which is in the northern central part of the country on the Mediterranean coast. Hundred fifty individuals were selected, ninety of them were males and sixty were females. They were selected randomly by using the “Google Form” questionnaire The social survey method was used in terms of listing and categorizing some popular proverbs according to what they cover of the social and the family relationships. The anthropological approach was used through the interview and the questionnaire method. The functional theory was adopted to analyze the meaning, objectives, and the reflection of the common popular proverbs in Algeria.
The study concluded the importance of the Algerian folk proverbs as they are very important to preserve the social and moral values of the Algerian society. The Algerian folk proverbs are the product of what has been deposited in the social consciousness towards the contempt and inferiority of women, and the Algerian popular proverbs indicated that marriage remains a sacred matter as it means building a joint life between men and women who always trying to maintain the cohesion and healthy relations among families that leads to a good cohabitation.
