The Poetical Translation for Ibrahim b. Muhammed al-Yalwajî's Poem al-Tantarâniyyah, a Comparative Study With the Source Text

Abstract

One of the Arabic poems that served as a source for the poetical translation events and carried out in the Classical Turkish literature is al-Tantarâniyyah by Ahmad al-Tantarânî (d. 485/1092). It was mainly to praise Nizâm al-Mulk (d. 485/1092) who was a famous minister of the great Seljuk State. The content of the poem is very similar to those used in praising prophet Mohammad. That’s why it gets high attention. Many poetical translations to the Turkish language were written about this poem. In addition to the translation of Kamal Pashazâdeh (d. 940/1534), the most prominent one is the translation of Ibrahim al-Yalwajî (d. 1293/1876). This translation, which is made in the same meter and rhyme as the source text, and captured the poetic feature of the source text based on sound repetition, has not been the subject of any scientific study until today. we divided this study into three main parts, firstly, general informations about the poem, which is the source of translation, and its author. Afterwards, the life and works of al-Yalwajī are mentioned briefly and the translation is also analyzed in comparison with the source text. Finally, the transcribed text of this translation is presented.
