College Buildings in Zaafran and Giza Palaces
from 1927-1936

On the eve of the centenary of Cairo University’s Faculty of Arts (1925-2025), as well as the first centenary of the heritage building for the college (1928-2028), this study addresses a group of documents digitally preserved in the electronic memory unit, about the college’s building in the Zaafran and Giza Palaces, from 1927 to 1936, under the deanship of professors Gustave Michaut, Taha Hussein and Mansour Fahmy.
The study uses the analytical descriptive approach, which signifies the importance of the documents from the letters sent by the college regarding its vision towards the main building in Giza. This building was reviewed by the Ministry of Public Works in 1929, which determined that it was too small to meet the institution’s needs. The Faculty presented recommendations to increase study areas, and overcome the building limitations. Additionally, Dr. Taha Hussein presented his aims to acquire places on campus for departmental expansion. As a result, on November 20, 1929, the Faculty received the old Law building on Al-Ramaha Square Street, after the administration’s approval. The study also presents the needs that the administration requested from the University to facilitate education in the college’s study halls. Finally, this study addresses the publication of some of these documents and paintings.
